Malcesine, Campiano, S. Michele , S. Maggiore, Malcesine

A route that runs inland behind Malcesine - once you have reached the mid-way cable car station and gone through a long stretch of woodland at the foot of the mountains that rise above Malcesine, you will make your way from one tiny old hill village to another, commanding lovely views over the countryside and the lake. S.Michele can be reached by cable car.

Setting off from the bus station in Malcesine, head north along the Gardesana (the main lake road) for 200 m, as far as a junction with traffic lights.
Bear right, go past the cable car station and continue for 1.5 km till you get to the cross-roads with the Strada Panoramica (Scenic road).
Turn right and climb steadily to loc. Campiano. From now on the route is easy to follow. A steep asphalt stretch of road takes you up to the mid-way cable car station. Continue to climb for about another 50 metres, then go under a bar that prevents access to motor vehicles. Here the route descends through a wood to a little church, the Chiesetta di S.Michele, not far from a fitness circuit. On the ride between S.Michele and S.Maggiore, you tackle a mixture of short uphill and downhill stretches on mixed terrain, mostly skirting a wood or cutting through it, and are rewarded by sweping views.
As you approach loc. S.Maggiore, you come to a fountain, where you bear right down a cobbled street. The route continues its descent until it joins the Strada Panoramica again. Follow signs for Madonna dell'Accoglienza in the village of Rocchetta, which looks like a splendid balcony jutting out above Malcesine. The last leg of your descent goes through Paier and brings you out at the cable car station in the town below.
